June 2020- New webpage project
Women In Radiology webpage
Who: Diagnostic Radiology, Women In Radiology Committee
What: UI design focused webpage, infographic creation, social media promotion
Result: Recognition of departments equity by university and national groups
Women are underrepresented in many fields and Radiology is no exception. However, OHSU’s Radiology department has nearly 50% women when the national average is less then 25%. I created a webpage to highlight this important department metric and the committee dedicated to strengthening it. I also recognized how easy it would be to put the numbers of women in our department into an impactful infographic for use on the page and in social media to further highlight this attribute.
This project started with a group of women who wanted to encourage and support women in Radiology- a male-dominated field.
Faculty Radiologists started a “Women in Radiology” group to support, mentor growth and leadership skills among the women physicians in our department. Our radiology group has an unusually high number of female radiologists, something the rest of the radiology community is trying to achieve. The leaders decided that several groups like potential residents, future faculty hires, and the radiology community, in general, would be interested in our efforts and should be promoted on our website.
Our planning process
Dr. Brixey came up with general text she wanted to convey about the group and some general ideas. I started building a page with the information on hand, and over several meetings, we honed in on the final page.
Personal challenges and incorporating best practice
Overcoming Limitations: Dr. Brixey wished the members be listed on the page with their informal committee titles. I didn’t want to add these informal titles to their existing OHSU profiles, but I do want their names to link to their OHSU profiles. OHSU uses Drupal as their webpage building platform, and there are style limitations. I can’t use HTML/CSS in Drupal, so I got creative with the members and leadership section. I chose to add a layer of profile element plus text in a 33/33/33 column rather than just a straight profile list.
Recognized opportunity: I’ve used Adobe InDesign only a few times, and it’s not my favorite program. However, recently I’ve started using Adobe Creative Cloud Express and have enjoyed how quickly I can produce custom graphics. For example, for the Women in Radiology group, I had access to numbers I thought would be great translated into an infographic, and I love the result. It coveys our department’s successes of gender equality in a very easy-to-read infographic. However, I have also been able to reuse this image in our social media efforts. Social Media content creation is always a struggle, and we always have a great response from sharing the infographic.
